Canoe St. Mary’s Eco & Art

Trip Details

The canoe trip is from 10am until 4:30pm.  Meet at the Salmon River Association Office on Hwy 7 near Sherbrooke at 9:30am. From there we travel a short distance to our launch site on the river near Melrose. The canoe trip will be relaxed and covers a route that is both beautiful and historic. Along the way, canoers will be occasionally gathered together to learn about the importance of rivers to global conservation, the history of river use on the St. Mary’s that has benefited the community through logging and salmon fishing, and the need for river restoration, which we are pleased to report are well underway.

There will also be two shore stops on our trip. The first will be a naturalist encounter with the river. We will use dip nets to look at aquatic organisms, take temperature and water speed measurements to better understand river dynamics, and make use of an underwater camera to see the river as fish do.  We will also warm up with a hot lunch on the shore.

Our second shore stop will be an encounter with the riparian forest, focusing on what is under our feet and above our head. We will explore how trees communicate, discover the secret lives of mushrooms, look at wildlife camera footage (who goes there?), discuss keystone forest species like the northern flying squirrel, and discover how birds in migration use forest valleys. We will also build some big-bird boxes and engage in a little art or writing.

Your hosts, Scott Beaver and Stephen, will provide an experience you will always remember. All you need do is bring good footwear, layers of clothing, rubber boots if you have them, and an inquisitive mind. Let us know if you need a canoe – we can help.
